The entire contents of Bert House, Athy, Co Kildare, are to be sold by Sheppard & Sons on Tuesday, with a number of other items added to make a total of almost 900 lots. This is a mixed gathering, with a number of pieces standing out, in some cases because of their unusual nature.

This is certainly the case for a silver-plated table fountain made by Edward Hall in 1868; a vase-shaped urn is set above two circular, dish-shaped tiers raised on fluted Ionic columns ringed with cherubs. From Bert House's dining-room, it carries a presale estimate of £2,000-£3,000. Also in the same room is a set of 12 dining chairs, stamped Strahan of Dublin (£7,000-£9,000), and a 12-feet-long William IV mahogany telescopic table (£8,000-£12,000). Among the Irish lots is a late 18th-century mahogany bookcase, its swan-neck pediment centred on a winged eagle (£14,000-£18,000), and a 19th-century Killarney wood teapoy (£3,000-£5,000). An 18th-century French kingwood and marble-topped bombe-shaped commode is expected to fetch £7,000-£9,000, a Regency mahogany breakfront bookcase has an estimate of £10,000-£15,000 and a Chinese Chippendale lacquered cabinet on a stand, dating from circa 1800, carries an estimate of £5,000-£8,000.

Belleek features strongly in the selection of china and porcelain available; one of the more unusual lots is a first-period crouching Venus with only a single arm (£2,000-£3,000), while another piece which should sell well is a pair of first-period cherubs each seated on a cushion (£1,400-£1,800). Found in the attics of Bert House some 20 years ago, and now being sold in paired and single lots, are 10 19th-century enamel and parcel gilt panels, each more than six feet high; no estimates are given for these. However, among the quirkier lots, a Victorian horse-drawn sleigh with two benches is expected to make £500-£700.

A mahogany and rosewood cross-banded sideboard (early 19th century) has an estimate of £3,000-£5,000 for Hamilton Osborne King's auction at the RDS next Friday
