A copy of the play which was due to be performed at the Abbey Theatre immediately after Easter weekend, 1916 is to be sold tomorrow by Town & Country auctioneers. The Spancel of Death was written by Thomas Nally and a first production had been advertised for Tuesday, April 25th, 1916. Tickets for the occasion were sold, with all seats booked. However, in the aftermath of the Rising all performances at the theatre were cancelled, and the work was never subsequently staged.
Related correspondence from W.B. Yeats and Lady Gregory, together with a letter from Eamon de Valera will be included in the same sale, which also features silver, porcelain, furniture and old toys. The auction begins at 2 p.m. in Town & Country's premises on Lower Ormond Quay.
