A European survey, the results of which were published in the editions of November 6th, was mistakenly reported as being part of a Eurobarometer survey.
A report headed "Planned bridge over Dodder is dropped", in the editions of Thursday, November 19th, stated that a proposal to build a bridge over the Dodder at Knocklyon had been removed from the South County Dublin Development Plan. In fact the plan is only at draft stage. The error occurred in the editing process.
A report in yesterday's editions on the election of Mrs Mary Robinson as Chancellor of Dublin University said that she will replace Dr A.J.F. O'Reilly. The present Chancellor is Dr Frank O'Reilly. The error occurred in the editing process.
A misleading impression may have been given by the headline and first paragraph of a report in last Thursday's paper headed "First-class image of education not backed by figures." This quoted an article by the former secretary-general of the Department of Education, Dr Don Thornhill.
The relevant passage in that article read: "We have tended to take the view in this country that our education system is a first-class one by international standards, but the available data do not provide grounds for complacency. We are not immune from the challenges and difficulties which confront the education systems in most developed countries. We have a good system which serves most of us - but not everybody - well."
When errors occur it is the policy of The Irish Times to correct or clarify as soon as it is practicable.
