A panel within the report in yesterday's editions on the drowning tragedy at Pollatomish in Mayo stated wrongly that the practice of hunting foxes by "lamping" was illegal and subject to serious penalties. We have been asked by Mr Des Crofton, director of the National Association of Regional Game Councils, which represents 890 gun clubs, to point out that the practice is not illegal. Section 38 of the Wildlife Act of 1976 forbids only the "lamping" of protected species of birds or animals, and not of such animals as foxes or rabbits. The error is regretted.
