Some of the figures included in both the headline and substance of an article - "1,000 fewer applicants seek career in nursing" - in the editions of March 11th may have been misleading. There were 5,591 applicants for training in general and psychiatric nursing in 1999, and 624 for mental handicap nursing in the same year. Not all applicants are eligible (not having passed the exams and assessments required for entry to training schools), and some individuals may have made application for entry to training in more than one discipline. The total number of applicants for entry to nursing schools this year in all three disciplines is 5,030, but no estimates of eligibility are yet available. There will be 1,500 places available in nursing schools this year.
