In an article on July 27th headed "Haughey cannot account for `puzzling' Baldoyle link" it was stated that a cheque from Mr John Byrne for £50,000 "ended up going to Mr Haughey in February 1989". In fact, the cheque for £50,000 was made payable to Guinness & Mahon bank and deposited to Mr Des Traynor's Amiens S/L account. Where it went thereafter has not been established. Solicitors for Mr Byrne have stated that the deposit was made without his knowledge. The payment occurred in 1987, not 1989.
The profile of Maj Gen Colm Mangan in the editions of July 29th said he was the only Army officer to take the general staff course with the German army. Two other officers, Col Stephen Timmons and Lieut Col J. P. Duggan, both retired, completed the same course.
