A report headed "Site closure threatens waste services" in last Friday's editions quoted Mr Tony Sharkey, spokesman for Donegal Waste Management Organisations, as saying that waste contractors had collected £36 million for Donegal County Council since privatisation. The figure should have been £6 million. The error occurred in transmission.

A leading article on Monday stated erroneously that the United States Congress was controlled by the Democrats. That party now controls the Senate, following a Republican defection, but the Republicans have a majority in the House of Representatives.

A report yesterday placed Bettystown in Co Louth. It is in Co Meath.

Where errors occur, it is the policy of The Irish Times to correct or clarify as soon as practicable.
