JAMES MURPHY & PAT MAHONEY Fabriclive 36 Fabric ****

This homage to New York City's classic dancefloor roots from the LCD Soundsystem duo provides one of the most unexpected delights of the season. It's certainly a counterpoint to their much-heralded past as punk rock tyros from the Big Apple 'burbs.

No doubt, though, these boys have the funk. Fabriclive 36, a gorgeous, on-point blend of spiritual disco, rare jazzy grooves, early house experiments and tech-like sounds, shows up the duo's love and respect for the classic sounds and shapes that infuse NYC dancefloors.

The greatest pleasures are in the details: the saxophone on Beginning of the Heartbreak, and the wonderfully mesmerising vocal coda on Donald Byrd & The 125th Street NYC's Love Has Come Around.
