RAIN & SHINE:Ireland's oldest annual traditional fair at Muff, near Kingscourt, Co Cavan, is expected to attract several thousand patrons today from all over the country.

The old fair, which dates back to the 12th century, is held each year on August 12th, but when the 12th falls on a Sunday it is held on the following day.

The event was banned for two years in the 19th century following sectarian faction fights, but the locals defied the authorities and kept the fair alive, by moving the venue to the nearby Lough-an-Lea Mountain.
