The Irish Timesin reporting that James Cameron was set to make a sequel to Ridley Scott’s upcoming Prometheus – itself a kind of precursor to Scott’s own Alien.
Of course, Cameron directed Aliens, the first sequel in the franchise. So the idea had a certain neatness to it. The rumour was driven by a dubious quote from Cameron that purportedly referred to the Canadian director’s work on Avatar. “Ridley saw what I was doing and the ideas I was exploring,” he doesn’t seem to have said.
“We sat down and talked about Alien, and saw that there’s big ideas hidden in these stories. Where do we come from? What does it mean to be human? This was something that Ridley saw as original and something he wanted to be a part of.” Cameron is currently taken up with developing a sequel to Avatar. Scott’s Prometheus emerges in early June. Is it a prequel to Alien? Is it a largely unrelated story set in the same universe?
The chatter is fast becoming deafening. It looks as if this writer was among many taken in by a low key April Fool last week.
