There have been the usual outbreaks of moronic booing at the festival, such as the bovine noise kicked up at the finale of Abbas Kiarostami’s Like Someone in Love. But there have also been hurrahs. Though Michael Haneke’s Amour remains the favourite for the Palme d’Or, the film that secured the best reception from the audience was, by some margin, Leos Carax’s absolutely extraordinary Holy Motors.
Starring the great Denis Lavant as a man who hops between parallel lives – a disgusting goblin, a dying man, a killer – the picture triggered actual cheers, whoops and hollers. You don’t hear that too often.
