In its “Jury Grid” the trade paper Screen International culls reviews from the world’s most distinguished film critics to discern what’s leading the pack in the race for the Palme d’Or.
At the time of writing, the surprise leader is, perhaps, Aki Kaurismäki’s Le Havre. It’s a fine film, but in a list that comprises word-of-mouth smashes such as Lynne Ramsay’s
We Need to Talk About Kevin
, epic behemoths such as Terrence Malick’s
The Tree of Life
and work from two-time Palme-winners the Dardennes brothers, Kaurismäki’s film seems a little dwarfed.
It doesn't mean anything anyway. Last year Mike Leigh's Another Yearwas way out in front from the moment it screened. Amazingly, the film didn't win a single gong. Throw a dart.
