DONALD CLARKE reviews this week's new DVD releases

ALICE IN WONDERLAND ***
Directed by Tim Burton. Starring Mia Wasikowska, Johnny Depp, Anne Hathaway, Helena Bonham Carter, Crispin Glover, Matt Lucas, voices of Michael Sheen, Stephen Fry, Alan Rickman, Christopher Lee, Imelda Staunton, Timothy Spall PG cert

Alice, now a young woman, returns to Wonderland. There are good things here. As the Mad Hatter, Johnny Depp tweaks his Willy Wonka to create a somewhat less malign, even more demented cackling maniac. But the CG backgrounds are very familiar – too much Avatar, perhaps – and the decision to ape Narnia in the overly martial last act is barmy (in a bad way). The DVD comes with a variety of covers.

CAPITALISM: A LOVE STORY *** Directed by Michael Moore PG cert

Michael Moore takes on capitalism. What else is new? But the latest from the bulky documentarian, largely concerned with recent financial disasters, turns out to be his least tendentious and most moving film since Roger Me. The sincerity of his disgust at contemporary inequalities cannot be disputed and, as ever, the comic montages are hard to beat.

DAYBREAKERS *** Directed by Peter Spierig and Michael Spierig. Starring Ethan Hawke, Willem Dafoe, Claudia Karvan, Sam Neill 16 cert

If, after Twilight, Let the Right One In, True Bloodand all the rest, you have the stomach for just one more vampire entertainment, then you could do worse than check out this stylish, agreeably disgusting drama from two promising Aussie whizz kids. Effectively creating a world run by bloodsuckers, it offers real imagination and significant (ahem) bite.
