The new Star Wars film has broken the box office record for the biggest single day in Ireland. Star Wars: The Force Awakens, the latest instalment in the franchise, took in €836,845 on its first day. Disney Ireland vice president Trish Long said the company was "delighted" with sales.
The film also generated a record $238 million in US and Canadian ticket sales over the weekend, beating the record $208.8 million for Jurassic World in June, according to Walt Disney Co estimates on Sunday. It had already set a new opening night box office record in the US and Canada, making $57 million on Thursday night, beating the previous record of $43.5 million set by Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2.
Worldwide, the movie reported $517 million in ticket sales by Sunday, just shy of the $525 million set by Jurassic World.
