Now, here’s a weird one. Late last year we reported comments from David Yates, director of the past few Harry Potter films, concerning his plans for an upcoming Doctor Who film. The quotes suggested that plans were afoot to apply a “radical transformation” (which many took to mean recasting) of Doctor Who for the big-screen version. Now, Steven Moffat, current chief writer on the show, has soundly (ahem) EXTERMINATED the story.

“There isn’t a film. I can assure you definitively that was all nonsense,” he said. “The BBC own Doctor Who and, for the moment, I run it for them. I can say that with authority because, as far as the BBC is concerned, I’m the voice of Doctor Who. So if I say it, it’s true.”

So what was Yates up to? “I don’t think [he] was ever signed to it,” Moffat said. “I never signed him, so he’s not. But I think he’s [expressed] an interest in doing it and he’s a very fine director and I think he’d certainly be someone that would be on the list for directing such a project.”
