Laurel or Hardy's bowler hat for up to £150
Herman & Wilkinson is to hold its May fine art auction next Thursday on the company's premises in Rathmines, Dublin. One of the more unusual items included in the sale is a bowler hat reputedly worn by either Stan Laurel or Oliver Hardy; presumably a quick inspection of the piece would indicate which, since the men were of strikingly different proportions. This lot carries a pre-sale estimate of £100-£150.
This is very much less than the £800-£1,200 expected for an Edwardian inlaid cabinet or £500-£800 estimated for a Victorian dining table. Bidding for the bowler hat and all other 700-odd lots begins at 10 a.m.
Furniture offered in sale of presbytery contents
The contents of a Dublin presbytery come up for sale tomorrow from 2 p.m. at the auction rooms of Town & Country on the capital's Ormond Quay. Among the furniture on offer is a large Victorian carved oak sideboard (estimate, £2,000-£2,500) and an Irish Victorian serving table (£600-£800).
In addition, the auction includes a set of six Sheraton-style dining chairs (£800-£1,000), a Georgian sofa table (also £800-£1,000) and a George IV dining table (£1,000-£1,200).
