3 cert, EA, PS3 (also Xbox 360) ****
When it comes to sports games, EA generally does a nice job, and
Grand Slam Tennis 2is no exception. It delivers a solid game that doesn't overdo the theatrics. It has a nice line-up of licensed players, from the Williams sisters and Maria Sharapova to Roger Federer and Rafa Nadal. But it also goes a step further and brings back some of the greats: John McEnroe, Björn Borg and Boris Becker are all playable characters, as are Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova. Like other EA games, the matches have been given a broadcast feel, and you get to play centre court in Wimbledon, so it feels as though you're taking part in something important. Controls are similar to other EA sports titles. Analogue sticks take centre stage, with one controlling player movement and the other controlling the type and direction of the shot. Once you get the hang of "Total Racquet Control" you can be more precise about your shots, although it will take a few games to master it. You can also opt for Move controls.
Grand Slam Tennis 2is a worthy alternative to the latest Virtua Tennis and Top Spin titles.
