"War doesn't make you a hero. It makes you tired." Whatever complaints you might have about Mars War Logs, it's not sentimental. This dusty, rugged sci-fi role-playing game takes place on the Red Planet after years of turmoil and conflict. You play Roy, a prisoner of war and unlikely hero. The strengths and weakness for Mars War Logs are common to RPGs. It's slow to start, sometimes clunky and gets bogged down in ropey dialogue and worse acting (which you don't want to skip in case it's important). The graphics feel somewhat dated too. But it gets the important things right – an epic scope, open world and interesting setting. The menus and power-ups are standard fare, but I liked how you could superimpose the map on the action like a veil over the screen. Combat ranges from scrappy melees to fancy weapons. Mars War Logs is a rough diamond, but RPG devotees could do much worse. mars-thegame.com
