BLIND BOYS OF ALABAMA Down in New Orleans Time Life ***
After seven decades a-hollering, Jimmy Carter and Clarence Fountain are gospel's Mount Rushmore totems. They're the remaining original members of The Blind Boys of Alabama, a group whose fortunes have risen, fallen and risen down through the years.
This CD of the group's recording session in the Crescent City had Allen Toussaint, The Preservation Hall Jazz Band and spirited young bucks The Hot 8 Brass Band lending a hand when the Blind Boys came to town.
How the well- travelled singers approach these dozen songs about hope and renewal will warm your heart.
To a backing of soulful traditional ribbons and bows, their voices raise the rafters with gusto. They may have sung louder on other occasions, but you can't fake this kind of passion. www.blindboys.com - JIM CARROLL
