When it comes to showing us where hip-hop really should be at in Zero Seven, producer Jneiro Janel is the man to hook up with. Last summer, Janel's Dr Who Dat? album was a thriller for those who prize vivid, rich and futuristic sonic visions. For Shape of Broad Minds, the producer has hooked up with a bunch of MCs to turn out an album in which the quality never flags - and that remarkable in a year when lacklustre cuts are the norm in this sector. As you might expect, the wonderful MF Doom steals the show with the anthemic bounce of the relentlessly soulful Let's Go, a track you could imagine the late, great J Dilla nodding his head to. But you'll also find slam-dunks here starring other Broad Minds, including Panama Black, Jawwaad and Rocque Wun. Moreover, you also have a barrage of wonderfully fresh beats from Janel to be going on with. This, as they say, is real hip-hop music. www.myspace.com/shapeof broadminds   JIM CARROLL
