Having caused quite a stir with Brokeback Mountain, Ang Lee is courting controversy again with Lust, Caution.
It's one of those rare movies that will go on US release with the restrictive NC-17 rating. Many US newspapers refuse to carry ads for films with that rating. Among the movies that were trimmed to avoid the NC-17 tag were Eyes Wide Shut, American Pie, Happinessand Team America: World Police, while films released with the rating include The Dreamers, Requiem for a Dreamand Showgirls.
As usual, it is sexual content rather than violence that has landed Lust, Cautionwith the NC-17, and the Toronto festival programme note describes it as "highly sexually charged". Starring Tony Leung and Tang Wei, it's set in Shanghai during the second World War. It opens in Ireland next January.
