"Based on the trends and performance of furniture in 1997, there will be a strong demand for late 18th century and 19th century examples, which still represent great value for money. Library and dining-room pieces from the William IV period or the neo-classical styles should continue to do well, and judging from 1997, quality and elegance with a simplicity of design will win out every time. Good mahogany dining tables have seen a dramatic comeback in recent times and we would see this trend continuing strongly in '98.

A surprisingly high demand for late 18th century and early 19th century oak furniture was very much to the fore in the latter part of the past year and we would see this as the start of a much larger trend. As has been the case for many years, items with definite provenance will command much higher prices.

Judging from the amount of interest shown by 1997 home buyers in 19th century marble and bronze sculptures, and indeed the amount of pre-sale bidding from international buyers, we would see a strong case for investing in sculpture in 1998. There is clearly a dwindling supply coming to the market, in particular of marble sculptures of a classical, well-formed nature, and also animal bronzes. Victorian paintings are still good value despite the strong demand, and signed works should feature well in 1998.

Specific collectables, as opposed to global collecting, of 19th century china will be the trend in 1998. Notable rare items of firstperiod Belleek, Derby, Worcester and art deco will be a feature of the year, as collectors have become far more discerning."
