LIONEL RICHIE Live Mercury **/ ***
It's a three-star review if you're a Lionel Richie fan, for here the Titan-jawed soul smoothie gets his hits out for the laydeez, and damn the boyfriends if they can't handle the smothering love action. It's a two-star review if you're a nonfan and casual Richie observer (guilty, m'lud), the kind of person, perhaps, who finds Richie's share-the-love schtick just alittle bit oily. That said, he can certainly put on a show (even if he actually can't dance on the ceiling) as evinced by this sweaty, value-for-money HD-recorded gig in Paris. All the hits are proudly on display: Easy, Ballerina Girl, Three Times a Lady, All Night Longand easily one of the cheesiest guilty pleasure songs (not for me, mind) of the past 20 years, Hello. Extras include behind- the-scenes footage of Lionel enjoying himself (so to speak) in Paris. www.lionelrichie.com
DAVID GILMOUR Remember That Night EMI ****
While Roger Waters and David Gilmour size each other up before doing battle for the loyalty of confused Pink Floyd fans, each carries on flying the PF flag. Waters decides to bring Dark Side of the Moonon the road, while Gilmour cracks on with selections from the PF back catalogue and releases superb prog-guitar albums such as On an Island(which, presumably to Waters's annoyance, topped the UK charts last year). In truth, Gilmour has the upper hand; this recording of Gilmour playing in full (and in sequence) his album is a subtle spectacle, so well lit and executed it's less a guilty pleasure than a downright chilled-out thrill. There are loads of Floyd album songs (selections from Dark Side, Wish You Were Here, Meddleand The Wall) and tonnes of extras: bonus tracks, three documentaries and music videos. The pithy review? Fab. www.davidgilmour.com
