Alex Metric's work as remixer and producer extraordinaire, collected here in the form of his debut album, has already garnered the young Londoner numerous accolades. Yet remixes are often pointless exercises if not treated with empathy and imagination, and all too often Metric's method lacks both. The dark, groove-laden soul of Depeche Mode's Personal Jesusis replaced by cold, predictable beats, and a remix of his own track Open Your Eyesfeaturing Ian Brown is simply tacky and horrible. There are some passable efforts, however; his clever club-oriented spin on the Beastie Boys classic Sabotageworks a treat, and the door to every Ibizan dance floor is blasted open by Ellie Goulding's Salt Skin. Overall, however, this sounds like the tired soundtrack to a Friday night that's been lived thousands of times before. See alexmetric.com
