Band of Skulls

Band of Skulls' music is ultra- adaptable; why else would their tunes be used on an arm-long list of ads, TV shows and film soundtracks? Strangely, that aspect of the Southampton trio's music proves their second album's downfall. Sweet Sourtries to be all things to all men, but the resultant album is hugely inconsistent. On the surface, Band of Skulls seem tightly bound to grimy garage rock, but dispersing softer, almost folk-laced songs in between the bruising riffs creates an odd balance. The dreamy sway of Close to Nowhereis redemptive in the face of the scattered, derivative blasts of high-octane rock, but overall it sounds like Band of Skulls are still figuring out what sort of band they want to be.
