Life of Love Western Vinyl***
The ethereal, sweeping sound of Callers – who formed in New Orleans before Hurricane Katrina dispatched band members to Rhode Island and Brooklyn – has room on board for many styles. If debut album Fortune made an impression through the persuasive powers of Sara Lucas's vocals and guitarist Ryan Seaton's subtle, elegant playing, Life of Loveis sent on its way by some sturdy songs.
Recording sessions began with a version of Wire's Heartbeat, which provided the trio with potential routes for an album that is happy to spin magic from the smallest of gestures. Lucas again is a standout, that smoky, bewitching voice equally at home as the songs veer this way and that, taking in art-rock, folk and the blues as the players trip along. As quiet triumphs go, this is one to relish. See myspace.com/callers
