Turning On Wichita ****

He may be an 18-year-old whippersnapper, but it's obvious that Dylan Baldi already has the knack for penning knockout pop tunes. What you'll find beneath the ragged, shabby, ramshackle, fuzzy no-fi contours that dominate his musical palette (and especially this collection of previously released limited-edition singles) are sturdy pop constructions that hit the spot again and again. Of course, Baldi is not the only charmer who has chosen to bury his songwriting craft in a wall of noise – see Wavves dude Nathan Williams, who hid his pop smarts in a wash of fuzzy static before dropping the sonic camouflage second time out – but you get a sense that Baldi, too, will move on. Certainly, given the shapes he's throwing on the candy-pop bounce of Can't Stay Awakeor the brilliant bubblegum poses struck for Hey Cool Kid, we'll be coming back to Baldi again.
