Best Coast, Dum Dum Girls and Vivian Girls may have recently refined the art of fuzzy female- fronted rock'n'roll, but by hitching her wagon to that scene, California-based Colleen Green's second album isn't always as convincing. Green's use of a drum machine is to her detriment, as it stilts the progress of songs that cry out for off-the-cuff creativity. Vibrant basslines (which pay heavy-duty homage to The Cure) perk up proceedings, while the Blondie-aping new wave vibe of
You're So Cool
and blatant Ramones tribute
Heavy Sh*t
are admittedly irresistible. Nonetheless, the lo-fi quality of these recordings gives the album a homogenised glaze that fizzles to a finish, when it could have blazed into life with a few essential tweaks.
