Ambition? Unless you're someone like Brian Burton aka Danger Mouse, you don't know the full extent of the word. The all-rounder's latest project is a contemporary spaghetti western in collaboration with Italian composer Daniele Luppi, using many of Ennio Morricone's seasoned musicians and enlisting Jack White and Norah Jones on vocal duties. An impressive line-up on paper, no doubt, but Rome's uneven tone may be its greatest downfall.
A heady atmosphere is brewed by the many lush instrumentals, as well as the White's edgy contributions (the steady stalk of Two Against Oneis truly brilliant), but it's just as quickly quashed by the smoothness of the pleasant if misplaced lounge-pop ditties ( Problem Queen, Black). An enjoyable romp, but certainly not Burton's crowning glory. See dangermousesite.com
