Lucky Number, ****
Hipster moustache, comedy glasses and synchronised dance moves? Before you write Darwin Deez off at first glance, have a listen to his debut album – because it may just provide the soundtrack to your summer. If the New Yorker’s record sounds like it was recorded in a cramped apartment with friends dropping in to provide moral support and handclaps, that’s probably because it was. Basic? Perhaps, but it’ll charm the scuffed Converse off you. These songs fizzle and snap with jerky guitar riffs, euphoric melodies and beats that stutter and bounce like a faulty fairground ride. Best of all, Deez knows his limits, so 32 minutes and 10 songs is just enough to hook us in before it starts to grate. All we’re missing is the sunshine. See darwindeez.com
