Although better known for his singular music for video games Fez and Bomberman Live: Battlefest, Disasterpeace's debut film score, It Follows, for David Robert Mitchell's 1970s-inspired horror film, is a standout. The San Francisco- based composer (aka Richard Vreeland) wraps his dy- namic mix of melody and noize in old-school electronic ambience to produce lyrical character themes that are abruptly intercut with action cues of explosive dissonance. The boldly aleatory combination of brooding suspense and heart-stopping scares (with nods as much to Krzysztof Penderecki and John Cage as to horror meister/scorer John Carpenter) makes It Follows a masterpiece of both musical technique and dramatic storytelling – and one of the most remarkable scores of the year yet. disasterpeace.com
