The Town
Silva Screen ****
2010 has been a good year for Harry Gregson-Williams, first with his superb score for Prince of Persiaand now with his new score. Reunited with director Ben Affleck ( Gone Baby Gone), Gregson-Williams combines simple themes and driving rhythms with warm colours, a vibrant mix of blues guitar, sweeping strings and bright electronica, to create a tense and dramatic score. Unlike some of his more recent generic action scores ( The Taking of Pelham 123, Wolverine), The Townrecalls the idiosyncratic verve and energy of earlier signature scores such as Man on Fire, Spy Gameand Smilla's Sense of Snow. It's a welcome return to form. See silvascreen.co.uk
