Gulliver's Travels, Varese Sarabande ****
After last year’s remarkable solo debut Monsters vs. Aliens, Gulliver’s Travels is new score by impressive newcomer Henry Jackman, a classical-trained composer turned genre-bender producer, from pop to post- minimalism (from Elton John to Michael Gordon), and successful electronica artist with three solo albums. Jackman has worked with the similarly maverick Hans Zimmer since 2006 as a programmer and orchestrator on several of Zimmer’s scores, and this score is gleefully Zimmer- esque in its playful subversion of genres and its dynamic mix of simple melodies, driving rhythms and bright colours. A score of rare skill and subtlety as comic action segues effortlessly into romance with surprising complexity and sophistication (the seven minute cue Ein Roboterleben is a masterful blend of adrenalin and feeling), Gulliver’s Travels is Jackman at his most promising.
