Jake Bugg: Jake Bugg

Jake Bugg ****

Interesting fact: 18-year-old working-class, council-estate- raised, Nottingham singer- songwriter Jake Bugg was watching The Simpsons one evening and, on hearing a snippet of Don McLean's Vincent, decided he wanted to write songs just like that. And so Bugg set about reconfiguring the singer-songwriter aesthetic in his own style, which is probably why so much on this debut sounds like a naturalistic blend of early 1960s Bob Dylan, Alex Turner, Buddy Holly and Richard Hawley. Where he'll go or what he'll get up to next is open to debate; already Bugg is lauded by Noel Gallagher, Chris Martin, Damon Albarn and Elton John. And Burberry and Fred Perry want him to model their clothes. So, you know, it could go either way. For the moment, though, this is honest, pure and – despite being utterly in thrall to its influences – extremely cool. jakebugg.com
