Night & Day Planet Mu***
Oriol Singhji likes to boogie. The Barcelona-born, Cambridge-based producer's debut album is another sign that even jazz-funk's smooth boogie can have another unlikely day in the sun. Night & Dayis a set of warm, sun-hazed and pitch-perfect grooves that owe as much to Herbie Hancock's mid-1970s slinky electro-jazz fixings as they do to the blissed-out Balearic bop which Singhji uses to finesse his sound. As befits someone who cut his teeth alongside Floating Points and the Eglo gang, Singhji produces rhythms that sound like they never went out of fashion, an attribute you can put down to how he subtly works and stokes the jazz-funk fusions alongside more tech-derived notes. As Joy FMand Spiralshow, Singhji's techniques and textures are just the ticket to send the soulboys with the Ford Cortinas in the audience home smiling. See myspace.com/oriolmusic
