KD LANG
Recollection
Nonesuch
****
She should sue. The Gracenote database describes the rarities disc in this four-CD retrospective as "easy listening". Now, kd lang may be easy to listen to, but to describe one of the finest torch stylists of her generation as easy listening is a travesty (the other two CDs are described as pop and alternative!). This collection comes in two flavours: the basic double-CD package and a four- disc boxset that includes the aforementioned rarities and a DVD of video performances. The meat is in the first two discs, 11 tracks in each, which retrace well-known high points and throw in a few surprises, such as an impressively nuanced new version of Halleujah. One can have nothing but admiration for Lang's sophisticated, smooth and powerful voice, her control and the intelligent way she has navigated her career. Casual acquaintances could start here, while completists have a few duets and specials to add to their collection. See kdlang.com JOE BREEN
