Combining Indian musical elements with jazz, the youthful Mahanthappa is a major figure on alto. He's joined here by a no less original altoist in the 75-year-old Green, whose style, forged out of Parker, was a significant influence on Mahanthappa himself, Steve Coleman and Greg Osby. Spurred by an incendiary rhythm section of Jason Moran (piano), François Moutin (bass) and either Damion Reid or Jack DeJohnette (drums), they're equally inventive, fresh and adventurous. Though both can venture outside creatively, Green favours doing the unexpected more inside, performing with offbeat lyricism on his own Soft, Rainer and Theresiaand Little Girl I'll Miss You. But he's unfazed by the intricacies of Mahanthappa's Summit, Eastern Echoesand Playing With Stones, and there is no sense of a generation gap as these two remarkable players blaze a fresh trail together.
