EOIN BUTLER's guide to downloads, singles and free audiostreams
CEE LO GREEN
Forget YouElektra ***
This is the belated clean version of the Gnarls Barkley man's summer internet smash Fuck You.While it isn't edifying to admit that much of the appeal of the original was based on its liberal use of profanity, there's no getting around the fact that, without it, this version is, well, kinda lame.
THE WANTED
Heart VacancyGeffen **
The boyband's second single might more aptly be titled Tune Vacancy. But the accompanying video is interesting, borrowing heavily from (of all things) Woody Allen's 1985 masterpiece The Purple Rose of Cairo. Coming next week, JLS reinterpret Bergman's The Seventh Seal.
SCHMACKEY THE SALADS
I’m Matt Dillon (Get Out of My Way) ***
Straight out of Newbridge . . . Their punk rock bluster is probably never going to set the world on fire. Their look, meanwhile, could best be described as Grease meets the Hardy Bucks. But I defy anyone not to enjoy this effort from Schmackey the Salads. It’s utter codology on a heroic scale. youtube.com
THE FLAWS
Part of You ***
The Monaghan four-piece return from a three-year absence with this breezy, Pernice Brothers-esque digital-only single, which is released online today. Their second album, Constant Adventure, will follow on October 29th.
JAMES BLUNT
Stay the NightAtlantic **
“There’s no quiet corner to get to know each other/But I’m a patient man, as you’ll soon discover.” Ugh. If the mental image of wibbly- voiced former Cavalry officer James Blunt being “intimate” with a lucky lady disturbs you as much as it does me, you may wish to replace it with a less offensive image. Your parents having sex, say.
