Paul Tortelier (cello) EMI Classics 688 6272 (20 CDs) * * * * *
This celebration of the work of French cellist Paul Tortelier, who died 20 years ago at the age of 76, is among other things a family affair. The great man features as cellist, conductor, composer (including a Bach-imbued solo suite), and arranger. He shares numerous works with his wife, Maud (another cellist who also gets to conduct), son Yan-Pascal (violinist and conductor), and pianist daughter Maria de la Pau. Tortelier was a noble and dignified musician who had a streak of austerity (found in his Bach) as well as showmanship. Anyone who was at one of his many Irish concerts will remember how he could act out a piece as well as play it. At bargain price, this generous and hugely varied selection of concertos, sonatas and chamber music is a steal. See url.ie/57cs
