Hazel Brooks (violin), David Pollock (harpsichord) Chandos Chaconne CHAN0795 ***
This is not a disc of unknown music by Henry Purcell, but a collection of pieces by his unknown (well, virtually unknown) younger brother (or cousin) Daniel (ca 1670-1717). "Although he was a victim of invidious comparison with his brother Henry," says The New Grove, "Daniel was a talented composer whose style, while perhaps too ornate, is never dull or incompetent." The scale is modest. The keyboard pieces (including song arrangements) and violin sonatas recorded here take 75 minutes to cover 53 movements. There are occasional hints in the best pieces of the more famous Purcell, but most of the music is in a lighter style, which Hazel Brooks and David Pollock handle with plain-speaking directness. url.ie/f1f2
