The Golden Age of Apocalypse Brainfeeder***
It's a long way from Suicidal Tendencies, the band that Stephen "Thundercat" Bruner once played bass for before the son of a Temptations' drummer moved on to work with Erykah Badu, Sa-Ra Creative Partners and Flying Lotus. Bruner's solo debut, is a slick, warm and evocative homage to 1970s jazz fusion, a sound and genre that was always destined for a redo at some stage. But with FlyLo as producer (the album is released on his label), The Golden Age of Apocalypseis a also a bit of a cosmic freak scene, as Bruner's sparkling sounds and spacey ideas benefit from extra rocket fuel. Some may find this boho astral plain too stoned to handle, but there's enough of a likable intergalactic, warped, Prince- like buzz to Fleer Ultraand a cover of George Duke's For Loveto keep you with the programme.
