The Something Rain Lucky Dog****
Familiarity can breed contempt, but in the case of Tindersticks, the minor shifts in tone and undiminished quality that have marked their lengthy career have become invaluably reassuring. Lyrically and musically, the band excels in subtlety, choosing suggestion over lurid detail. They're capable of surprises, however. Opener Chocolatefinds David Boulter narrating the story of a night on the pull with a sting in its tale. Vocalist Stuart Staples still draws from the same well of white-collar angst, his baritone floating elegantly as saxophones seduce and squawk in equal measure on Come Insideand Frozen. Surprisingly for the Nottingham veterans, some songs fail to ignite; Slippin' Shoesand Medicinecruise without reaching a satisfying destination. Yet, even a mildly under-par Tindersticks are more engaging than many artists operating at full tilt. tindersticks.co.uk
