Watch Me Dance: Agitated by Ross Orton & PipesNinja Tune ***
When Tom “Toddla T” Bell was looking for ideas for a remix album with a difference, it didn’t take long before Sheffield underground producers and dancehall aficionados Ross Orton and Pipes came to mind. The pair, significant influences on Bell’s musical outlook when he started out, took his Watch Me Dance album from last year and turned its bass side out, creating an exuberantly bolshie soundclash in the process.
While the album was originally recorded in Kingston, allowing Bell to showcase some Jamaican zip, this particular Steel City odyssey is about stripping action-packed electro bangers back to their essential fixings and let the resulting digital bleeps dictate new paces and directions. Thanks to this plot, tracks Lose Control and Badder Man Runs rework Cruise Control and Badman Flu from the original album into far-flung, tough, thumping delights.
