If 2008's Knowle West Boywas all about Tricky going home to the English west country to rediscover his roots, this lean, punchy and restless album is about moving much further afield again. Tricky is now billeted in Paris, and Mixed Raceis a soundclash that catches him flitting from humid Jamaican funk ( Kingston Logic, with Terri Lynn supplying her ice-queen diva lines through a Daft Punk filter) to smooth, smokin' jazz ( Come to Me). Elsewhere, he adroitly works the Theme from Peter Gunninto the flow of Murder Weapon, and also finds a use for Bobby Gillespie's vocals on the suitably trippy Really Real. While you could find fault with the fact that such diversity are more snapshots than fully realised portraits, Mixed Raceis still a reminder of Tricky's prowess as an astute, sharp- eared producer. There's plenty of creative sparks in the old dog yet. See myspace.com/trickola
