It sounds like the punchline to a bad joke: what do you get when three ex-major label employees meet at a colleague's leaving party? Yet that's just what happened to Darren Bancroft and husband-and-wife Dede and Thomas WP, who were made redundant from EMI. Their debut is the sort of thing you'd hear at a disco for nihilistic teens in the 1980s, a notable New Order influence bearing down heavily on tracks such as
Divisive and Love,
What You Doing?. Pulsating standout
Honeytrap, meanwhile, grapples with synths and deadpan vocals in a way that only Phil Oakey's Human League could match. But there's a modernity here as well – traces of Hot Chip and Telepathe linger, although some songs do take too long to get to the point. Still, this is a band with potential. See wehave band.com
