So your parents feck you up, do they? Well, if it wasn’t for Max McElligott’s mother (a violinst who took her son to all her concerts) and father (a historian who travelled from Hull to Detroit to Scotland’s Grampians region), it’s highly unlikely that McElligott would have been in a creative and geographical position to make his debut album with noted producer David Fridmann (Flaming Lips, Mercury Rev, MGMT). The result is very good indeed, as McElligott, inspired by classic songwriters (Elton John, David Bowie, Paul McCartney), aims to put the boot into the likes of Scissor Sisters and Mika (each of whom are currently AWOL). Song suites of unrequited love and post-apocalyptic paranoia might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but if they are (and especially so if they’re sheathed in melodies as snappy as these), then pull up a chair.
