CONTEMPO STRING QUARTET
Hugh Lane Gallery, Dublin Sun Noon Adm free 01-2225550
The takeover by Christmas concerts is not quite complete. There are two programmes of string quartets on offer this week. And, by curious coincidence, both are free.
The Apple Hill String Quartet, who are resident artists of the Apple Hill Center for Chamber Music in Massachusetts, are regular visitors to the northwest. They play in Letterkenny on Saturday, offering a programme of Haydn (the Sunrise Quartet) and Schumann (the Quartet in A, Op 41 No 3), as well as a work they commissioned from American composer Dan Sedgwick: a set of Variations which they premièred last summer.
Galway’s ensemble in residence, the ConTempo String Quartet, make one of their all-too-rare appearances in Dublin in the Hugh Lane Gallery’s free Sundays at Noon series. They’re coupling works by Haydn (the Quartet in D, Op 20 No 4) and Mendelssohn (the Quartet in E flat, Op 44 No 4).
