Having recently turned 30, Colleen Green is feeling her age. It's not quite crisis time for the marijuana-loving party girl, but more a period of clear-eyed, self-reflection. Abandoning the naive DIY charm of two earlier lo-fi releases, I Want to Grow Up favours full-band, technicolour rock. Combining the melodic chops of Best Coast, The Thermals and Weezer, Green contemplates the merits of her preferred vices: drugs, booze and boys. Pumped with power pop hooks, TV and Pay Attention carry enough bombast to evade their nagging lack of originality, while Things That Are Bad for Me (Parts 1 and 2) divide the Boston native's moral battle into two stinging guitar salvos. Whether it's knowingly derivative or simply fuelled by nostalgia, I Want to Grow Up is an imperfect but endearingly honest life-stage document. hardlyart.com
