Producer and arranger Ryan Truesdell has spent the last five years excavating Gil Evans' original hand-written charts – even resorting to forensic science to recover the legendary arranger's original intentions from his own later corrections – and on 2012's Centennial album, brought a book of lost Evans arrangements back to glorious life.

This set, recorded live at the Jazz Standard in New York, unearths more gems from the Evans archive, reaching back all the way to the 1940s and his apprenticeship with the fabled Claude Thornhill orchestra.

The gorgeous lilt of Evans’ still startling original arrangements for horns is preserved, not in the aspic of academia but in the living, breathing performances of a group of New York’s finest musicians such as Evans might have selected himself.
