Another example of hitting it big online before breaking through commercially. Adam Young (he and Owl City are one and the same) began by beavering away in his parents’ basement in smalltown Owatonna, Minnesota, creating music that blended sweet pop and supremely melodic electronica.

It all went pleasantly pear-shaped for Young around 2009/2010, when his major-label album, Ocean Eyes, spawned the monster hit Fireflies, which went supernova across the world. The sheer ubiquity of the song might have scuppered an otherwise one-hit wonder, but Ocean Eyeswas one of those records that touched a nerve with the kind of people who spend too much time attached to their laptops, so Owl City's longevity seems assured.

Young’s downside is that he isn’t jagged enough to appeal to lovers of glitchy pop. Still, if cosy/fuzzy indie-pop is your bag, then put it down on the floor and dance around it.
